Mothers who broke the myth of leadership in business arena

In this patriarchal society, the men and women were earlier distributed responsibilities and both were expected to adhere and fulfill their obligations with utmost dedication without complaining.

While men were perceived as the “sole bread earner”, women were employed with the task of housekeeping and her boundaries were well established around the four walls of the kitchen only. Let us discuss some of the inspiring mothers who are doing a great job in the business arena which was earlier thought as “reserved for men” only.

Indira Nooyi- We all must be aware of the global beverage brand called “Pepsi” and other associated brands like “Mountain Dew”, “Mirinda” and others but do you know the global face of this successful company. Yes, Indira Nooyi is the Indian American Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PepsiCo, a global American beverage company. Being ranked among the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, she has completely changed the face of the company globally.

Married to Raj K. Nooyi, Indira Nooyi is the mother of two daughters and is the perfect example of the powerful business mums who are making a powerful impact globally. Her effort in the business and personal level was appreciated by the Forbes when she was ranked at 3rd position among the World’s Powerful Mom’s list.

Chanda Kochhar- Chanda Kochhar is the Managing Director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of ICICI Bank. She is known to change the face of retail banking in India and helmed the affairs of the ICICI bank in the year 1984 as a management trainee. With a long journey that is full of several ups and downs, she finally found her place at the top of the management hierarchy with being appointed as the MD and CEO of the bank in the year 2009.

She is married to Deepak Kochhar and is the mother of two children, a daughter and a son thereby managing the different roles with great ease. As per the Forbes Asia’s “50 Power Businesswomen List 2016”, she was ranked at the 22nd position and was further ranked at 40th position by the India Today’s “High and Mighty Power List 2016” in the year 2016.

Roshni Nadar- Roshni Nadar Malhotra is the Executive Director and CEO of HCL Enterprise. She is the daughter of HCL founder, Shiv Nadar. Roshni Nadar was named as the CEO of HCL Corp in 2009 at the young age of 28 and has been working rigorously in building the global brand image of the company. The young businesswoman also works actively for the not-for-profit organisation of the company known as Shiv Nadar Foundation and performs a wide range of philanthropic activities. Being at the helm of HCL, she ventured into the healthcare business in the year 2014 and also launched the HCL TalentCare, a skills training company.

The young businesswoman is married to Shikhar Malhotra and is the mother of two children. She was honoured with the prestigious NDTV Young Philanthropist- Indian of the Year award in the year 2014 and was also featured in the Most Powerful Women in India Inc. by Business Today for the year 2016.

Naina Lal Kidwai- Naina Lal Kidwai is the renowned Indian banker, Chartered Accountant and business executive who is currently the Group General Manager and Country Head of HSBC India. Being a former president of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), she has handled the multiple roles in HSBC Bank since the year 2002. The amazing businesswoman is married to Rashid Kidwai and is the mother of two children, but she has been managing her family and professional life together with great ease. She has done commendable work in the banking and financial sector which has earned her a Padma Shri Award and numerous other accolades over the years.

Vandana Luthra- She is the woman who brought the fitness and wellness into the Indian mainstream through her VLCC Health Care Limited company that has representations in Asia, GCC and Africa. Vandana Luthra is the founder and Vice Chairperson of the VLCC, a beauty and wellness company that offers services in the areas of weight management, beauty care treatment, advanced dermatology and cosmetology solutions.

The inspiring business leader is married to Mukesh Luthra and is the mother of two daughters. Due to her contributions in the wellness and social areas, she has been conferred with Padma Shri in the year 2013 and has also featured regularly in the prestigious Fortune Magazine annual listing of “50 Most Powerful Women in Business in India” for the five straight years from the year 2011 to 2015.
