A Dozen Sachin Facts To Know on His Birthday

Sachin Tendulkar is the most familiar name in the world’s largest democracy. In our big country with so many culture, religion, language, and race, I guess cricket is one such thing which unites us. Suddenly, the whole sense and sensibility of patriotism doubles or triples when there is a burning cricket match somewhere in the world. And Sachin has got a lot to do in preparing India for that madness. His strokes, his styles, and a never say die attitude have created many fans not only in India but across the globe. Especially for the kids and adults of 90’s, Sachin has been a great boost and role model. The rise in Cricket Coaching Clubs can also be heaped on the success stories of Sachin Tendulkar. There are many moments in his career that defined and re-defined his style and cricket in whole. You may ask anybody: Which is the favorite win among all Sachin Specials? Most people would give you countless answers.

Personally, I would like to take you all to the year 1993 to Eden Gardens, Calcutta. The moment was Hero Cup and South Africa was the opponent. The scoreboard for India said: 195 all out (50 overs). This is an achievable score and therefore the Indian bowling had to be a strong one. But you cannot always have a piece of cake in cricket ground! It was a nail-biting match and we all could clearly see that South Africa would pave the way to Finals! But something magical happened when Sachin Tendulkar came to the forefront and showed the world his tricky bowling skills. The Last Over bowling of Sachin when South Africa required only 6 runs to close the game was re-designed by this little master when he took two wickets down. The world thereafter has known him to be a great opener and dependable batsman but his match-winning bowling streak that day still gives goose bumps!

On his 44th birthday, let’s know Sachin Tendulkar a notch higher with these following facts:

  1. Once upon a time in 1988, Sachin played for Pakistan and you have to believe this trivia about him! The man who gave us multiple wins against this country played for a short while at the Brabourne Stadium for an exhibition match. The opponent team was India and Sachin was fielding near the boundary line and also missed a significant catch (Was that intentional?! He is a patriot we know that he carries our national flag in his cricket bag and also dons it on his helmet)
  2. At a very young age of 19, Sachin Tendulkar became the youngest Indian cricketer to play county cricket.
  3. Most of the budding cricketers know that Sachin is perhaps the only player in the world to use a very heavy bat weighing 3.2 lbs. or 1.45 Kg. This is also one of the reasons behind his master strokes. Lance Klusener is another batsman who used a bat heavier than this.
  4. In a long career spanning over 24 years, Sachin has been stumped only once by Ashley Gil in the year 2002 in a test match in Bangalore.
  5. Our very own Harry Potter or Daniel Radcliffe is a huge fan of our national hero, Sachin Tendulkar. Maria Sharapova once remarked that she doesn’t know who Sachin is and we don’t mind such ignorant statements right? After all, our Sachin has fan following in every corner of the cricket and non-cricket world (Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, and Argentina footballer Diego Maradona)
  6. In the year 2013, Indian Postal Services launched a stamp of Tendulkar and this is a matter of honor and pride. He became the second person in our history after Mother Teresa to have a stamp releases in their lifetime.
  7. As per studies conducted by Forbes in 2013, he was the 51st richest sports personality in the world whose worth was 22 million dollars.
  8. Sometimes we hate the Third umpire and sometimes we love them, depending on their decision in favor or against the team we support. It may astonish you that Sachin Tendulkar was the first batsman to be declared out by a third umpire in the year 1992 on the second day of the Durban Test Match.
  9. Zimbabwe is the only Test-playing country where Sachin has never scored a Test century.
  10. He is the only cricketer in our India to have received all the prestigious sports and civilian awards, viz., Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Bharat Ratna.
  11. In the year 2007, Virgin Comics fashioned a new superhero called ‘Master Blaster’ based on Sachin to launch a new series of comic books.
  12. The most gratifying and proud record that Sachin holds is that of World Cup. He has played 6 cricket world cups “ the most number of world cups ever played by any other cricketer. He is also till date the highest scorer in Cricket World Cup. This is truly world class“ right?

One thought just crossed my mind. We all know that this game called cricket was brought to India by the British Raj and we have all sobbed and laughed with Lagaan where an interesting tale was woven around cricket. The British people came here, ruled here, and were evicted from here but they couldn’t take the cricket away from our genes “right?  Today, Sachin Tendulkar is the world’s most followed cricketer on any social platform and his landscape of work have enriched cricket in a big way.

Do legends ever age? No, they just shine better with age. On your 44th birthday, Sachin Tendulkar, we from the family of Ferns N Petals wish you from the bottom of our hearts. Millions of roses, tulips, orchids, carnations, daisies, lilies, chrysanthemums, and gerberas remain for you. Long Live Master Blaster!
