A Date With My Grandpa

Karke Dekho Acha Lagta Hai

As far as I remember, my grandfather has always been old. No matter how hard I try I could never imagine him being young because that’s how I have seen him since the day I started recognizing people. I have seen his hair grow from light grey to pure white, his wrinkles growing larger day by day, his knees losing their strength and his eyes becoming smaller.

From starting our day by sipping a cup of tea while sitting in our balcony to having dinner together every night, we both have grown older being used to each other. My grandpa lived a happy and healthy life with my grandma. But, when she passed away last year, I could see his heart break.

With time, he stopped waking up early, eating meals on right time, socializing with people, going on a walk and doing everything which used to make him happy. I knew I was losing him slowly and that was bothering me day and night.

One day, I asked my mom to give a letter to my grandpa, written by me, which said:

“I know you have been upset or rather broken since the day grandma left us. But, I am much more upset than you because not only I miss my grandma but my grandpa too. During her last days, I promised her to take care of you and to keep you happy, but so far I’ve failed. I know you loved her beyond everything, but I haven’t loved you any less. If, you still love me the way you used to, then I want a day of yours, only you and me. It’s a date!”

From my bedroom’s window, I could see his teary eyes when he folded back the letter and kept it in his pocket. After half an hour, he came to me and said “I am all yours, my doll”.

I requested him to get ready in his favorite black suit, gifted by my grandma. I booked a chauffeur-driven car, which drove us to our favorite restaurant. I ordered all those dishes which we both loved to have every time we visited the place. He finally started talking, about grandma, their relationship and me. After lunch, we went to the park and sat on a bench, where he poured his heart out to me. We sat there for almost three hours, where I was listening and he was talking.

When we reached back home, he kissed me on my forehead and said “Get up early tomorrow, we have to go on a walk. We both need to shed some kilos, don’t we?”

That date I can never forget. And, we didn’t stop there, we plan a date every week because that’s what make both of us happy.
